This complete cycle of Beethoven violin sonatas was recorded during a series of live performances in 1998. Mutter devoted the entire year, together with her partner, Lambert Orkis, to an extensive global tour focused on these works, and the accounts are infused with a sense of cross-connection, expressive freedom, and depth of insight acquired from such prolonged concentration. It shows Mutter in full maturity, commanding the artistic confidence to take risks and imprint her intensely personal...Read more

The Archduke is Beethoven's most popular piano trio, and one of his greatest "middle period" works. The interpretations serve the music admirably, though the sound is somewhat veiled. Although the set is rather awkwardly laid out--Op. 127 is split between two discs, and the...Read more

Musically and technically inspired
I just finished listening to Opus 59 No. 1 and had to write. This is one of the greatest recordings of the one of the greatest quartets played by one of the greatest quartets I have ever heard. Perhaps the greatest. The Quartetto Italiano had the perfect intonation, phrasing, tone, and dynamics that one expects from a modern quartet (they performed from 1945 to 1981), but their musical intelligence, their sense of line, and their intense and continuous concentration was extraordinary. I listened...Read more
