1998 Gaja Chardonnay Gaia & Rey, Piedmont, Italy
1998 Gaja Chardonnay Gaia & Rey, Piedmont, Italy White WineRare Wine
Angelo Gaja planted the Gaia & Rey vineyard to Chardonnay in 1979 and these vines are now producing fruit of optimal quality. The site is named after Angelo’s eldest daughter Gaia Gaja, and his grandmother, Clotilde Rey. The vineyard lies 1,380 feet above sea level where fruit ripens slowly and retains crisp acidity. The 1998 Gaia & Rey is elegant and complex. Low yields (less than 2 tons per acre) and small-barrel aging make this an age-worthy wine peaking from 2003-2008. Just 1,000 cases produced.
